==History==

The Hits Northland began as Radio Northland, a radio station in Whangarei on 1026AM, Kaikohe on 1215AM and Kaitaia on 1026AM. It had the call sign 1ZN. The station became part of Classic Hits FM in 1993. In the late 1990s it moved to FM - 96.4FM in the Far North, 106.1FM in the Bay of Islands, 96.4FM in the Mid North and 95.6FM in Whangarei. From 1998 onwards programming was limited to a local breakfast show between 6am and 10am including weekends, and outside these times most programming originating from Classic Hits studios in Auckland. Newstalk ZB took over the station's AM frequencies in 2001 and 2005.
In 2012 local programming was reduced to weekdays between 6am and 9am. On April 28, 2014 all stations part of the Classic Hits network were rebranded as The Hits. A networked breakfast presented by Pauline Gillespie and Grant Kareama was introduced to almost all The Hits stations with the former breakfast announcer moved to present a 6-hour show between 9am and 3pm.〔
